At Curaçao’s northwestern tip, beyond Westpunt, Watamula puts the force of the sea on display. Waves push into openings beneath the limestone, sending water surging and, when the swell is right, throwing spray across the rocks. Stay a while and watch the rhythm change with each incoming wave.
The rugged coastline gives you plenty to photograph, from the texture of the rock to the white water breaking against it. The bigger splashes depend on sea conditions, so come for the landscape as much as the blowhole. Sometimes the most interesting part is watching the water gather before the next surge.
The final approach follows an unpaved road, and the ground around the hole is rough and uneven. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and sun protection, and keep well back from the opening and cliff edges. Use your camera’s zoom for a closer view.
Watamula works well as a stop while exploring Westpunt. Give yourself time to watch and listen. The sea provides enough of a show without getting close to the edge.
