Head toward Westpunt and give yourself a morning for Christoffel National Park, Curaçao’s largest and most biodiverse park. Christoffel Mountain is the landmark here, rising above a landscape of cacti, woodland and winding trails. There’s plenty to notice along the way, from birds moving through the trees to the island’s shy white tailed deer. Spotting one takes patience and a little luck.
The mountain climb is one of the park’s more demanding routes, so come prepared for a proper hike. There are also shorter trails and scenic driving routes for exploring at a gentler pace. A guided hike or tour is worth considering to learn more about the plants, wildlife and history you might otherwise walk straight past. Check the park’s schedule for seasonal activities before your visit.
Leave time for the Savonet Museum, located inside the park in Landhuis Savonet. It adds the human story to the landscape, exploring the former plantation and the lives of the people who lived and worked here.
Start early, wear sturdy shoes and bring at least two liters of water per person. The park’s mountain climbing cutoff is 10 AM because of the heat, so make the climb your first plan of the day.
