Born at sea in 1948 to a Dominican mother and Curaçaoan father, Jean Girigori has spent her life immersed in the Caribbean’s rich artistic traditions. She lived in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Haiti, where painter George Paul Hector encouraged her early talent. Her first exhibitions took place in Haiti, followed by shows in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Known for her bold, expressive style, Jean’s work is deeply rooted in West Indian culture, religion, and women’s rights. You can visit her gallery in Punda at Passaatstraat 8
